Handyman project hours & cost factors

Pick a project and a region. See how long the work takes on site and what actually moves the quote you get, so you can read a quote properly before you accept one. No email required, no sales sequence.

Pick the closest match, multi-scope jobs default to the largest line item.
Region changes the materials and the drive, which is why the same job is not the same job everywhere.
"Hard" moves the hour range toward the upper bound.

Why there is no dollar figure here. Fix Pro San Diego is a referral service. We match you with independent local handymen, we do not employ them and we do not set their prices, so any number on this page would be invented. The hour ranges are how long the work itself takes: the low end assumes good access and nothing unusual, the high end reflects older homes, tight access, deferred maintenance, or HOA documentation steps. The number that counts comes from the pro, before any tools come out.

FAQ

Why does this tool not give me a price?

Because an honest one cannot. Fix Pro San Diego matches you with independent local handymen, it does not set their prices, so any number here would be made up. What this tool does instead is show you how long the work actually takes and which factors move your quote, so you can read the quotes you get and tell a fair one from a padded one.

Why do coastal and backcountry jobs tend to cost more?

Coastal work needs salt-rated products and marine-grade fasteners, and exterior surfaces there need more prep. Backcountry is a long drive each way, so those jobs get scheduled as a dedicated trip. Central, inland, East County, and South County have no such adjustment built in.

Are materials part of the quote?

It depends on the job. Labor-only items like TV mounting, a sticking door, or pressure washing have no materials of consequence. Most other jobs include standard consumables such as caulk, drywall mud, screws, and small hardware. Specialty items, a specific tile, a custom paint color, premium hardware, are normally priced separately. Ask which way your quote is written.

What if the job turns out bigger than this suggests?

A good pro stops and shows you before doing extra work. If a drywall repair opens up and there is water damage behind it, expect them to photograph it and walk you through the added scope and cost before continuing, not add it to the invoice afterwards.

How do I compare two quotes fairly?

Check that both cover the same scope. Ask whether materials are included or billed separately, whether disposal and cleanup are in the number, what their labor warranty covers and for how long, and whether a return visit is priced in when a job needs cure time. Two quotes can differ a lot and both be reasonable if they cover different work.

What tasks are out of handyman scope?

New electrical circuits need a C-10 electrician, major plumbing rough-in or a re-pipe needs a C-36 plumber, full roof replacement needs a C-39 roofer, refrigerant work needs a C-20 HVAC contractor, and anything load-bearing needs a structural engineer. California also requires a licensed contractor once the aggregate price for labor, materials, and everything else reaches $1,000, per B&P Code section 7048. We point you to the right kind of contractor when a job crosses one of those lines.
