A cracked shower tile is a small finish ticket only if the wall behind it is dry and the neighbors sit firm. A wet cavity, a failed pan, or a missing waterproofing layer is a different job. This page is how to compare those scopes. It is not a Fix Pro price list.
What should be in a cracked-tile quote
A few-tile swap includes removal, substrate check, setting, grout, and sealer on the repaired joints. Ceramic and porcelain are usually easier to source than mosaic, glass, or stone. Matching is the swing factor. If the carton is gone, say so before anyone chisels.
Ask the pro to state how many tiles are in the starting boundary and what happens if an adjacent tile comes loose during removal.
What should be in a grout quote
Regrout is removal of failed joints, cleaning, new grout, and sealer. Enclosure size, epoxy versus cement grout, and how hard the old grout is all change labor. Regrouting a shower covers the substrate stop-tests. Do not treat grout as a waterproofing repair.
Leaks behind the wall
Soft drywall outside the stall, a musty smell that survives cleaning, or staining on the next room are inspection flags. Opening a wall, drying, plumbing, and rebuild are not “tile replacement.” They need their own line items. Related reading: tile water-damage signs.
Cost factors that belong on paper
- Tile type and whether a spare exists
- Number of tiles versus full-field grout
- Access (corners, niches, valves)
- Whether waterproofing is in or out of scope
- Permit status if plumbing or a new pan enters the ticket
Fix Pro San Diego does not set labor rates. Local SERP results for tile repair include restoration companies, grout specialists, and tile contractors. Their estimate language is theirs. Ask for a written total.
Do not use unsourced dollar bands as a Fix Pro price. Compare two written numbers for this stall, not a percentage of an invented retile.
Small caulk touch-ups are not automatically DIY-safe. If the joint is the only failure, use the bathroom recaulk page.
Confirm current CSLB and local permit rules for the proposed contract. Check a contractor on the CSLB site before you hire. Opening a wet wall is a different request from a few-tile swap.
