Failed bathroom caulk is a wet-joint problem. This page is the replacement decision for tub, shower, vanity, and floor beads. One joint or the whole room is the scope map. Fixing a bad bead is the sequence if the last job was messy.

Why a bead fails

Mildew grows where moisture sits and ventilation is weak. Acrylic latex is more porous than 100% silicone. Black or pink stain on the bead is a surface observation. It is not a lab mold report.

Movement cracks or peels a bead that cannot stretch with the tub or shower pan. New caulk over old caulk bonds to the failed layer. That is a prep failure, not a “San Diego humidity years” statistic. There is no verified three-to-five-year life for every bath.

If grout in the field is crumbling, that is not recaulk. See shower caulk or grout.

Product by joint, not a universal winner

100% silicone is the usual wet, high-movement choice for tub and shower perimeters. It is not paintable. Follow the tube for tool and cure. Do not invent a 24-hour rule if the label says otherwise.

Siliconized acrylic tools easier and is often paintable. It is a weaker wet-area choice than silicone. Vanity splash zones and dry trim are closer fits.

Floor-to-wall beads see mop water and different movement than a tub rim. Name the joint in the request.

Removal needs a clean, dry joint. Scoring with a metal blade can scratch porcelain. Plastic tools reduce that risk. They do not make DIY automatically safe on a cultured-marble surround.

How to talk about cost

A tube at a hardware store is not the job cost. Failed prep can let water behind the surround.

A captured Unstoppable Handyman San Diego recaulk page listed labor and materials as consistently $255 for a standard bathtub-and-bathroom-sink combination or a standard kitchen sink plus countertop-to-backsplash seam when photos confirm the area is suitable. A captured Taskrabbit San Diego sealing listing said caulking services begin at $40 per hour in San Diego. Those are their figures, dated to the job SERP capture. They are not Fix Pro prices.

Ask the matched pro for a written list of joints, full versus partial removal, and product. Confirm current permit rules with the authority serving the property if the ticket grows into fixture or plumbing work.

Fix Pro San Diego is a referral service. It does not recaulk or set a walkthrough time. Call (858) 400-4611 and we’ll match you with a local pro who quotes caulking and sealing before starting.
