A cracked floor tile is sometimes a one-piece swap. Sometimes the crack is telegraphing a slab or substrate problem. Decide from observations, not from a promise that one new tile will last.

What the crack pattern can show

Hairline crack: a thin line on an otherwise seated tile. It may be impact, a void in thinset, or movement. Multiple hairlines in a line often follow a joint in the slab. That is a pattern to photograph, not a diagnosis you can confirm from the surface.

Full break: the tile is in pieces. Impact can do that. So can an unsupported hollow under the field.

Popped or tented tile: the piece sits high or rocks. That is adhesive or movement territory. Do not grout over it and call the job done.

San Diego County includes expansive clay in some neighborhoods. That geology is real. It does not prove your floor sits on clay, and it does not rank “how often” tiles fail. If a crack runs in a long straight line, say so in the request. Ask the pro whether a crack-isolation membrane or slab review belongs in the scope. Do not order a full floor from a photo.

When a single-tile swap can be in scope

A single replacement can fit when:

  • Neighboring tiles sit firm
  • You have a matching spare
  • The failure traces to a known impact
  • The pro finds a sound, dry substrate after the broken piece is out

Lot-match is the usual blocker on older floors. Sun-faded fields will not match a new carton. If the match fails, the scope may grow to a section, not automatically the whole house.

This is a floor-tile decision. Shower walls and waterproofing belong on regrouting a shower or shower tile repair cost.

Cost without a brand price list

Fix Pro San Diego does not publish a one-tile or full-floor price. Labor, matching, isolation membrane, and demolition are different tickets.

Tile SERP results often lead with cleaning, restoration, and full-service tile companies. They do not set Fix Pro rates. Ask for a written boundary: one tile, a defined section, or a larger plane, plus what happens if removal shows a wet or cracked substrate.

There is no published duration that fits every floor. Access, thinset hardness, and matching all change the visit.
