A door that rubs contacts the frame or floor along an edge. That is a different request from a sticking door that mainly misses the latch or binds only at the strike. Keep the two topics separate when you write the request.
What rubbing actually looks like
Close the door slowly and watch the gap. Rubbing is a scrape, drag, or paint transfer along the top, latch edge, hinge edge, or bottom. Mark the first contact point with removable tape. Do not keep forcing the door past that point.
Coastal humidity can swell wood. Inland clay soils can rack a frame over years. Neither is a ranked “number one cause” for every house. Record whether the rub appears after rain, after a long closed period, or all the time. The independent pro uses that pattern. They do not need a climate lecture.
Loose hinges can drop a corner so the latch edge hits first. A racked opening can close the gap on one corner and open it on the opposite. Unfinished edges absorb moisture faster than sealed faces. Those are inspection clues, not proof of a hidden structural failure.
Checks that stay on the hardware, not the slab
Start with the hinges while the door still hangs. Tighten only screws that still bite. If a screw spins, stop. Filling a stripped hole with wood and glue is a common shop method, but it is not automatically safe on a heavy exterior slab or a split jamb. Photograph the hinge leaves and the gap around them instead of removing the door on the first pass.
Do not plane or belt-sand as a first move. Removing about an eighth of an inch from an edge is irreversible. If you do sand later, seal the bare wood. An unsealed cut can swell again. That is a material fact, not a timed “20 minute” DIY guarantee.
Shim only if a pro has confirmed the door is hanging out of plumb and the jamb can take a thin shim. Driving hinge pins out of a loaded exterior door is not a beginner task.
When the request should leave DIY
Hand the opening to a matched pro when:
- The slab is warped when viewed along the edge
- More than one door in the house started rubbing at once
- The jamb feels soft, stained, or split beside a hinge
- Sanding would have to go past a small high spot
- The door is an exterior fire-rated or solid-core unit you cannot lift safely
Confirm current CSLB and local permit rules for the proposed contract. Check a contractor on the CSLB site before you hire.

Rubbing versus sticking
If contact is only at the latch and strike, use the sticking-door guide. If the leaf scrapes along a long edge or the head jamb, stay on this page. If the problem is the frame itself, send the photos described in door frame repair in Escondido even when the house is elsewhere in the county. The inspection list is the same. The city field is for routing.
